Position Summary:

The Berkshire Museum is seeing a dynamic, flexible and experienced communications, marketing and audience development professional to join our team as Director of Marketing and Communications (DMC). In collaboration with the Director of Development, the DMC will be responsible for developing and implementing strategies and marketing plans that advances the Berkshire Museum’s identity, goals for visitation, successful fundraising projects and overall community-building.  

In addition, the DMC will maintain the museum’s brand identity through all mediums: press, publications, museum website, advertisements, press releases and social media. The DMC will oversee all in-house branding, including wayfinding and promotional signage, as well as any staff assigned to this department. 

Primary Functions and Major Responsibilities: 

  • Responsible for maintaining and growing a strong, recognizable, and engaging brand for the museum through earned, owned, and paid media.  
  • Lead all advertising and marketing efforts for the institution, including promoting major exhibits, events, and building connection with the community.  
  • Effectively communicate internally with staff, Board of Trustees, and the various audiences that comprise the museum’s constituencies.  
  • The ideal candidate has at least six years of marketing and communications experience building and leading marketing campaigns, from managing social media content and search engine optimization/marketing, to earned media.  

Duties include: 

  • Develop and execute strategic communications, marketing, and advertising initiatives. Manage compliance with internal and external collaborators of the Berkshire Museum on an institutional basis and/or targeted to specific exhibitions, programs, and initiatives. 
  • Use print, broadcast, and digital media to disseminate news and information about the museum 
  • Secure positive earned media coverage and maintain relationships with reporters and relevant influencers  
  • Create and manage the department’s budget tied to the annual marketing plan  
  • Manage the museum’s website content and back end, social media platforms and advertising campaigns 
  • Develop KPIs and metrics for all campaigns. Develop reports, statistics and marketing strategy for presentation to senior staff as well as to the Board of Trustees’ Marketing Committee at their regular meetings  
  • Hire, train and manage any staff assigned to the department 

Museum's Objectives and Core Mission: 

  • Oversee the production and targeted distribution of promotional marketing materials, ranging from ads, brochures, invitations, fliers, and postcards to billboards and signage 
  • Contribute to the design and production of materials for special events  
  • Review and edit all written external communication from all departments at the Berkshire Museum, providing consistency and uniform messaging 
  • Develop issues and crisis response plans, and act as a key member of the response team 
  • Collaborate with other departments as necessary, overseeing weekly promotional such as e-blasts, Facebook posts and on-line newsletter 

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher preferred  
  • 6+ years marketing/communications experience with management responsibilities 
  • Excellent project management skills, used to working on multiple initiatives simultaneously solutions-oriented, collaborative mindset 
  • Department budgeting skills required 
  • Highly organized and meticulous, staying on top of key deadlines and program and exhibition timelines 
  • Impeccable writing and editing skills 
  • Working knowledge of WordPress, Photoshop, Word, InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, Canva, Mailchimp and Constant Contact 
  • Reliably commute or planning to relocate before starting work (preferred)  

Working Conditions and Travel Requirements: 

This position will work in an office environment and be required to travel occasionally to assist with museum-related events as needed, occasionally outside of traditional hours. 

Compensation: 

  • Annual salary range $55,000- $65,000 
  • Typical hours 8:30am – 5:00pm; some overtime required for special events 
  • This is a senior management-level position that offers health insurance, paid time off, employer contribution to 403(b), and life insurance
