POSITION SUMMARY

The Dean of Students is a highly visible member of BART’s team who plays a critical role in

setting a positive school culture. As a member of the school administrative team, the Dean is

expected to build relationships within the school community by collaborating with students and

faculty in the different aspects of school life. The Dean will maintain strong interpersonal skills

and be able to set clear expectations for conduct by upholding and communicating BART’s

values of purpose, curiosity, effort, integrity, reflection, and respect. The Dean supports the daily

operations of the school – especially those pertaining to attendance, discipline, and student

activities – and supports programming for classroom management and PBIS implementation

strategies. The Dean of Students assists at all levels in maintaining a safe and secure school,

including school-wide Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS), building

supervision and safety planning, student conduct and discipline management, and community

resource referrals and service engagement. The Dean of Students is a school-year position and

reports to the Principal.


EXPECTATIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Student Code of Conduct:

● Maintain and update, as appropriate, the school discipline matrix outlining consequences for common behaviors in collaboration with Assistant Principal.

● Continuously monitor incoming incident reports and behavioral referrals in order to rapidly respond to concerns.

● Teach/re-teach behavioral expectations to students following misbehavior, including the creation of reflections and lessons as consequences for misbehavior

● Assign appropriate consequences for behavioral infractions

● Coordinate with counselors, school adjustment counselors and school administration to schedule restorative meetings between community members.

● Update log entry files, maintain accurate records.

● Investigate incidents as necessary, including conducting interviews with students and staff.

● Communicate with families regarding student behavior and performance and attend/lead family meetings.

● Conduct accurate and complete investigations as necessary, including thorough documentation and communication with stakeholders re: civil rights violations, harassment, bullying, etc.

● Complete juvenile court filings, CRA’s, and referrals to local agencies (i.e. 18 degrees/FRC)

● Assist in the management of restrictions, seclusion, separation of particular students

● Daily communication and coordination with bus drivers re: bus behavior


Oversee School Detentions and In-school Suspensions:

● Assign school detention and ISS, and monitor whether or not students serve detention

● Develop and assign accountability and reconciliation projects and activities as a tool to promote learning, growth, and improved decision making for students

● Oversee supervision schedule for detentions and ISS, providing direct supervision of students as required.


Establishing and Maintaining a Multi-Tiered PBIS System:

● Collaborate with school leaders to develop and implement PBIS practices.

● Conduct “teach-to’s” with students for expected behavior in various locations/contexts.

● Observe classrooms to gather information on PBIS and classroom management systems.

● Implement behavior intervention plans as necessary.

● Collaborate with Behavior Intervention Specialists, BCBA’s, and student support team members to create and monitor behavior tracking sheets.


Establish and Maintain Systems for a Safe and Orderly School:

● With the AP, create building supervision plans for different times and locations, including: morning entry; lunch; hallways, recess, dismissal; special events/assemblies; etc.

● Provide building supervision that includes reteaching expected behavior in different locations/contexts.

● Monitor data to identify where more support or planning is needed to ensure a safe and orderly school.

● Support the AP in developing and successfully implementing emergency plans for school safety.

● Provide regular presence for supervision and monitoring throughout the school during the school day including hallways, bathrooms, lunch room, and common spaces at school entry and exit.

● Be available for teacher requests for building support at classrooms and common spaces as necessary to support classroom resets or student support as needed.


QUALIFICATIONS

● Bachelor’s degree in Education, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).

● Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in an educational setting, preferably in student support, counseling, or administration.

● Demonstrated experience in discipline management and behavioral intervention strategies.

● Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively engage with students, parents, and staff.

● Understanding of the developmental needs and challenges of middle and high school students.

● Experience in conflict resolution, crisis intervention, and managing student behavior in high-stress situations.

● Ability to work effectively with students and families from diverse backgrounds and cultures.

● Proficient in analyzing behavioral data and using it to inform practices and interventions.

● Knowledge and experience with Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and restorative practices.

● Strong interpersonal skills with a sense of humor, warmth, and a commitment to building a sense of belonging in the school community.

● Techniques in conflict resolution and de-escalating students

● Calm, non-reactive demeanor

● Trustworthy individual able to maintain confidentiality and professionalism

● Expert knowledge of best practices and strategies pertaining to school rules, procedures, and practices.
