POSITION SUMMARY

The Behavior Intervention Specialist plays a critical role in fostering a positive school environment by implementing evidence-based behavioral interventions for students in grades 6-12. As a member of the school’s student conduct and discipline team, the Behavior Intervention Specialist will collaborate with teachers, staff, students, and families to support students in managing their behavior and enhancing their academic and social-emotional development. The Behavior Intervention Specialist supports daily operations by developing and implementing individual student behavior plans and collaborating with faculty to implement best practices for classroom management strategies. This position is student facing and extensively will engage with students throughout the day to conduct behavioral assessments, direct student conduct education and training, engage in data collection and record keeping pertaining to conduct, discipline, attendance, and academic performance, plan and implement interventions, and assist in PBIS, restorative interventions, family engagement, and other school-wide initiatives. The Behavior Intervention Specialist is a school-year employee and reports to the Assistant Principal.


Key Responsibilities:

  1. Behavioral Assessments:
    • Conduct assessments to identify students' behavioral challenges and underlying needs.
    • Develop and implement individualized behavior intervention plans (BIPs) based on assessment results for general education students
    • Collaborate with Special Education faculty and staff to support faculty with implementing BIPs for students on educational plans.
  2. Direct Student Support:
    • Work one-on-one or in small groups with students exhibiting challenging behaviors to provide targeted interventions.
    • Monitor student progress and adjust intervention strategies as needed.
    • Assist Dean and Assistant Principal in the selection and development of accountability and reconciliation projects, strategies, and materials to promote learning, growth, and improved decision making for students.
    • Facilitate restorative meetings and student education and learning experiences pertaining to student conduct and behavioral expectations.
    • Assist in the management and implementation of restrictions, isolation, and/or separation of students as necessary.
    • Assist Dean of Students with oversight and provide supervision of detentions, ISS, or student reset operations as needed.
  3. Collaboration with Staff:
    • Partner with teachers to create and maintain a positive classroom environment through effective behavior management techniques.
    • Conduct classroom observations to develop individual student behavior intervention plans and support faculty in the development and implementation of appropriate classroom routines, procedures, and expectations.
    • Provide professional development and resources on behavior management, classroom management, and teacher-implemented tier one intervention strategies.
    • Collaborate with special education team members to provide behavior and student conduct support for students on IEP and 504 plans.
  4. Data Collection and Analysis:
    • Collect and analyze data related to student behavior, attendance, and academic performance using PowerSchool, Panorama, and other school systems, to inform interventions and track progress.
    • Prepare reports for administration to guide school-wide behavioral initiatives.
    • Participate in MTSS meetings as requested and support school-wide MTSS initiatives.
  5. Family Engagement:
    • Facilitate communication with families to discuss behavior concerns, intervention strategies, and progress.
    • Engage families in the behavior support process to reinforce positive behavior at home.
    • Participate in family and team conferences as appropriate.
  6. School-Wide Initiatives:
    • Collaborate school staff and administration to develop and implement school-wide positive behavior intervention and support systems and restorative practices initiatives.
    • Participate in school committees focused on improving school culture and climate.
    • Provide regular presence for supervision and monitoring throughout the school during the school day including hallways, bathrooms, stairwells, lunch room, and common spaces. Assist AP and Dean of students to develop and implement a schoolwide supervision and monitoring system.
  7. Crisis Intervention:
    • Assist in managing crisis situations involving students and provide de-escalation strategies.
    • Support teachers and staff with classroom reset and student removal as necessary.
    • Support building safety operations and planning to ensure a safe environment for all students and staff.


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
  • Experience working with students in a public secondary school setting, particularly those with behavioral challenges.
  • Knowledge of behavioral intervention strategies and best practices.
  • Experience with PBIS systems within a public secondary school setting.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build relationships with students, staff, and families.
  • Completion of restraint training or restraint certification, or ability to complete such training or certification, to be update/maintained annually.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism
  • Calm, non-reactive demeanor
  • Ability to analyze data and make informed decisions regarding student interventions.
  • Commitment to promoting a positive school culture and supporting diverse learners.


Work Environment: This position may involve working in various settings within the school, including classrooms, hallways, and offices. The Behavior Intervention Specialist will collaborate closely with teaching staff, administrators, and support personnel.
